All Classical Adversary Methods are Equivalent for Total Functions

چکیده
We show that all known classical adversary lower bounds on randomized query complexity are equivalent for total functions, and are equal to the fractional block sensitivity fbs(f). That includes the Kolmogorov complexity bound of Laplante and Magniez and the earlier relational adversary bound of Aaronson. For partial functions, we show unbounded separations between fbs(f) and other adversary bounds, as well as between the relational and Kolmogorov complexity bounds. We also show that, for partial functions, fractional block sensitivity cannot give lower bounds larger than √ n · bs(f), where n is the number of variables and bs(f) is the block sensitivity. Then we exhibit a partial function f that matches this upper bound, fbs(f) = Ω( √

Tight adversary bounds for composite functions
The quantum adversary method is a versatile method for proving lower bounds on quantum algorithms. It yields tight bounds for many computational problems, is robust in having many equivalent formulations, and has natural connections to classical lower bounds. A further nice property of the adversary method is that it behaves very well with respect to composition of functions. We generalize the ...
متن کاملAll Quantum Adversary Methods Are Equivalent
The quantum adversary method is one of the most versatile lower-bound methods for quantum algorithms. We show that all known variants of this method are equivalent: spectral adversary (Barnum, Saks, and Szegedy, 2003), weighted adversary (Ambainis, 2003), strong weighted adversary (Zhang, 2005), and the Kolmogorov complexity adversary (Laplante and Magniez, 2004). We also present a few new equi...

The quantum adversary method is one of the most versatile lower-bound methods for quantum algorithms. We show that all known variants of this method are equal up to a multiplicative factor: weighted adversary [Amb03], strong weighted adversary [Zha04], spectral adversary [BSS03], and the Kolmogorov complexity adversary [LM04]. We also present a few new equivalent formulations of the method. Thi...
متن کاملEffects of Probability Function on the Performance of Stochastic Programming
Stochastic programming is a valuable optimization tool where used when some or all of the design parameters of an optimization problem are defined by stochastic variables rather than by deterministic quantities. Depending on the nature of equations involved in the problem, a stochastic optimization problem is called a stochastic linear or nonlinear programming problem. In this paper,a stochasti...
